EU Whistleblower law sidelined

Increased calls by Members of the EU Parliament for a new whistleblower protection law for the EU have been rejected.

The new law would apply to issues concerning corruption within the EU, across member countries’ borders, and relate to matters of corruption affecting EU finances.

Considering the growing trend worldwide to improve whistleblower protection as a key ‘plank’ in the fight against corruption, the current pressures on EU finances and the will within the EU parliament to affect change, this comes as a surprise.

It is estimate that 4-5% of EU finances are lost to corruption alone. The time has come, it seems, for increased whistleblower protection.
